THE Perth Redbacks handed the Cockburn Cougars their first loss of the 2018 Women’s SBL season on Friday night while the Lakeside Lightning continued their undefeated start as Round 4 got underway.
Round 4 of the 2018 Women’s SBL season began with the two matches on Friday night.
That saw the Perth Redbacks defeat the Cockburn Cougars 74-69 at Belmont Oasis and the Lakeside Lightning beat the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 97-78 at Lakeside Recreation Centre.
Round 4 of the Women’s SBL season for 2018 began on Friday night at Belmont Oasis with two in-form teams, the Redbacks and Cougars, clashing.
In the end it was the Redbacks on their home floor who won a third straight match beating the previously undefeated Cougars by five points.
Perth scored just nine points in the second quarter to go into half-time six points down. But they delivered 45 points to 34 in the second half to come away with the narrow victory.
Kayla Standish had a shooting night to forget for the Redbacks making 3/16 from the floor but she still finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Makailah Dyer struggled shooting too going 4/17 from the field but ended the night with 12 points, five rebounds and two steals.
Jess Jakens contributed 11 points and four rebounds for the Redbacks while Mikayla Pirini added nine points, five boards and four steals, Bianca Donovan nine points and Alix Hayward eight points and seven rebounds.
Kisha Lee did all she could to try and keep the Cougars undefeated in 2018 finishing with 24 points and 11 rebounds.
Isabelle Miotti added 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists for Cockburn with Brianna Moyes contributing 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Taryn Priestly also had nine points and four assists, and Vanessa Michael eight points and eight boards.
The other Friday night Women’s SBL match saw the Lightning host the Eastern Suns.
Lakeside continued its unbeaten start to 2018 with a commanding performance set up with the 36-point to 11 opening quarter. They went on to claim a 19-point victory.
It was a strong shooting night from the Lightning who nailed 35/70 from the field and 13/31 from three-point range on the back of 27 assists for the 35 made shots.
Sydnee Fipps starred with 24 points and five rebounds, shooting 10/16 from the field and 4/7 from downtown.
Ali Schwagmeyer added 20 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Lightning with Courtney Byrnes contributing 14 points, five rebounds and five assists, Ash Grant 11 points and nine boards, and Paris Duffield 11 points.
Alex Ciabattoni delivered another strong all-round performance for the Eastern Suns with 29 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and five steals on shooting 14/27 from the field.
Jewel Williams scored 18 points to go with six rebounds for Kalamunda while Jennie Rintala added 11 points and five boards.
