About the SBL

The State Basketball League (SBL) is a semi-professional basketball league in Western Australia. The league comprises both a men’s and women’s competition and is governed by Basketball Western Australia.

The League was founded in 1989 and currently comprises 14 Men’s teams and 12 Women’s teams. Each year’s season takes place between March and September.

Ten of the 14 SBL Clubs are based in the Perth Metropolitan area, from Joondalup in the north to Rockingham in the south, and Perry Lakes in the west to Kalamunda in the east. The remaining four clubs are based in regional Western Australia, including Bunbury (South West region), Geraldton (Mid West region), Kalgoorlie (Goldfields region) and Mandurah (Peel region).

The SBL celebrated its 31st season in 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 SBL Season was cancelled and later replaced with a state amateur competition known as the West Coast Classic.
