LAKESIDE remained undefeated and East Perth winless after Sunday’s Round 5 Women’s SBL action with the Lightning beating the Rockingham Flames and the Eagles losing to the South West Slammers.

It was a second win in 18 hours for the now 6-0 Lightning as they returned from Bunbury the previous night while the team they beat on Saturday, the Slammers, made it a second straight big win on consecutive Sunday afternoons.

Round 5 of the Women’s SBL began on Friday night with the Mandurah Magic beating the Cockburn Cougars 73-69 at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre and the Kalamunda Eastern Suns beating the Perry Lakes Hawks 99-69 at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

Then on Saturday night, the Stirling Senators won their first game of 2018 and handed the Mandurah Magic their first loss, winning 76-73 at Warwick Stadium.

The Perth Redbacks also beat the East Perth Eagles 105-57 at Belmont Oasis and the Lakeside Lightning defeated the South West Slammers 94-79 at Eaton Recreation Centre.

Then on Sunday afternoon, the South West Slammers beat the East Perth Eagles 79-48 at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre, and the Lakeside Lightning beat the Rockingham Flames 102-82 at Lakeside Recreation Centre.

The Sunday Women’s SBL action began with the Eagles hosting the Slammers with both teams coming off losses the previous evening. East Perth had lost by 48 points to the Redbacks while the Slammers were competitive but ultimately lost to the unbeaten Lightning on their home floor.

There was little time to stew over those results for both teams with the short turnaround but the Slammers began to pull away in the second quarter to lead 38-25 by half-time. They then delivered a dominant 41-23 second half performance to take out the win by 31 points.

Slammers co-captain Courtney Bayliss top-scored with 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists shooting 6/12 from the field and 4/10 from downtown.

Import big Tori Fisher had another impressive performance with 16 points, nine steals, eight rebounds and two assists with Kate Fielding adding 13 points, six boards and three assists, Georgia Denehey 11 points, five assists and four rebounds, and Raya Thompson eight points.

Eryn Fisher top-scored for the Eagles with 19 points, 11 rebounds and three steals despite shooting just 5/19 from the floor. She did hit 9/12 free-throws.

Akim Lual contributed 10 points and four rebounds for East Perth with Cameron Flynn adding six points and seven rebounds on 3/15 shooting.

It was then a good challenge for the Lightning to remain undefeated on Sunday afternoon at home to Rockingham with Lakeside coming off the trip to Bunbury the night before and the Flames making their only appearance of the weekend.

But Lakeside came out strong with 33 first quarter points to 23 and they were never headed from there going on to win their sixth straight match and doing so by 20 points.

Once again the three stars came up big for the Lightning with them still not at full strength with Sam Roscoe yet to arrive and Mel Moyle out injured.

But Ali Schwagmeyer delivered 29 points, six assists, six steals and four rebounds on 10/17 shooting. Ash Grant produced 28 points, seven rebounds, three steals, two blocks and two assists on 11/14 shooting including 4/4 from downtown.

Sydnee Fipps also had 24 points, four rebounds and three steals nailing 5/10 from three-point range.

Courtney Byrnes contributed seven points, 10 rebounds, nine rebounds and two steals as well for the Lightning despite shooting 2/14.

Darcee Garbin had a huge performance for the Flames as her run back with the team gets close to coming to an end. She finished with 30 points, nine rebounds and three assists while shooting 12/19 from the field and 4/7 from beyond the arc.

Chelsea Armstrong added 22 points, three rebounds and two assists for Rockingham hitting 6/11 as well from downtown. Maddison Allen contributed 14 points and five rebounds.
