Sunday Women’s SBL Recap – Week 8

THE Cockburn Cougars returned to the winner’s list in the Women’s SBL to close Round 8 action on Sunday afternoon with a 12-point victory against the Perry Lakes Hawks.

Round 8 of the Women’s SBL began with two matches on Friday night with the Perth Redbacks beating the Stirling Senators 82-55 at Belmont Oasis and the Kalamunda Eastern Suns defeating the Joondalup Wolves 78-75 at HBF Arena.

There were another four matches in the Women’s SBL on Saturday night including the Rockingham Flames beating the Willetton Tigers 91-56 at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

The Lakeside Lightning also remained undefeated beating the Perry Lakes Hawks 71-70 at Bendat Basketball Centre with the Mandurah Magic beating the East Perth Eagles 76-46 at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre, and the Kalamunda Eastern Suns downing the Cockburn Cougars 87-62 at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

Then on Sunday afternoon, the round concluded with the Cockburn Cougars beating the Perry Lakes Hawks 74-62 at Wally Hagan Stadium.

Both Cockburn and Perry Lakes entered Sunday’s clash coming off playing on Saturday night with the Cougars having lost to the Eastern Suns while the Lady Hawks lost a heart stopper by a solitary point to the undefeated Lightning.

Both teams needed a victory to stay in touch with the top eight teams as well heightening the stakes at Wally Hagan Stadium, but in the end the Cougars proved too strong going on to win by 12 points and improve to a 3-6 record on the season.

Meanwhile the defending champion Hawks slipped to 1-8.

The Cougars set up the victory in the second quarter where they held the Hawks to just nine points and scored 25 themselves to lead 44-24 at half-time.

Perry Lakes actually won the second half but Cockburn still took out the 12-point victory.

Kisha Lee delivered an impressive performance for the Cougars finishing the afternoon with 22 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and two steals on the back of shooting 10/19 from the field.

Point guard BJ Moyes added 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists too for Cockburn with Matilda Muir delivering 18 points and 10 boards.

Isabelle Miotti contributed 12 points too for Cockburn.

Toni Farnworth did what she could to try and lift Perry Lakes with last year’s Grand Final MVP finishing with 19 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

Emma Clarke added 11 points and nine rebounds off the bench for the Lady Hawks while Lauren Jeffers had eight points, four rebounds and three assists.
