MEDIA RELEASE: SBL 2020 CANCELLED

MEDIA RELEASE
14 May 2020

The WA State Basketball League (SBL) 2020 Season has been officially cancelled.

Basketball WA has notified all SBL clubs, due to the COVID-19 restrictions and the resultant inability to be able to complete a season within the required time or under the various restrictions that will be needed to participate in the foreseeable future, it has abandoned the season and will look towards the planning for 2021 to relaunch a re-invigorated SBL.

SBL General Manager Adam Bowler said: “On behalf of the SBL Commission, we would like to thank the clubs and the SBL community for their understanding of this decision given the current circumstances.

The viability of our clubs and the health and safety of the community is paramount and the current and future restrictions would not allow our clubs, players and members to be able to safely operate and participate in the league.

The decision to cancel was not taken lightly, although difficult we feel it gives us all the best chance to ensure we are able to compete in 2021.

Basketball WA and the Clubs will now look to see how we can provide those players involved in the semi-professional SBL some other form of activity over the winter months to maintain their involvement and fitness in Basketball so as to prepare for next year.”
